Arthritis Management
The University Community Hospital Arthritis Management program is a multi-disciplinary approach, designed to incorporate various services in relieving pain and improve function in patients with osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. The Physical Therapist assesses joint motion, strength, pain, posture and mobility skills. The Occupational Therapist will assess upper extremity motion, strength, pain, activities of daily living skills, and educate patient in joint care/protection. Physical Therapy treatment involves range of motion, stretching, strengthening, aerobic activities, relaxation techniques, modalities and body mechanics training/education. Occupational Therapy involves hand and arm range of motion and strengthening, custom splints, activities of daily living retraining, and use of modalities.
The program goals include: relief or reduce joint pain, improve or maintain function, improve joint movement and muscle strength, prevent or minimize deformity, improve endurance and conserve energy during activities of daily living, and patient education regarding the disease and its management. Patient and caregiver education is provided on coping skills, home exercise, joint protection, energy conservation, posture, body mechanics and the use of assistive/adaptive equipment.
